The Dieting Experience
Changing the conversation about weight loss and dieting

Therapist Case Summary
Lily is gaining proficiency with challenging her automatic thoughts. She is learning to recognize the difference between her "friend" inner voice and her "enemy" inner voice. As she modifies her thinking, she is interacting differently with those around her. She has spoken to her mother and has been able to articulate her feelings about their past relationship as well as the current stressors impacting both mother and daughter. While this was anxiety provoking for Lily before their conversation, she felt proud of herself afterwards and felt that their dialogue was productive. Lily has also been more assertive with Sam and has begun setting limits with him. She had worried that she would feel guilty about this, but reported afterwards that it felt "empowering", and she said she felt her resentment decrease in the aftermath. Lily has also begun assigning chores to Stacy and Justin, including caring for Ashley and Melanie. She is asking for help at work with her projects and delegating responsibility to others in the office. As a result, Lily feels less stressed and overburdened.
Notably, Lily has found her voice with Matt. She has expressed all of her issues regarding their marriage with Matt and has asked him if he will agree to participate in marital therapy. Matt reluctantly agreed after initially saying he had no time to go to therapy. Lily has asked me for a referral and I gave her the names of several therapists to contact.
Lily reports that her symptoms of anxiety and depression have diminished. She is terminating her individual sessions at this time. Closing recommendations to Lily are to continue to self monitor her thoughts, continue to focus on balance in her work and home life as well as appropriate goal setting in the area of health and wellness. Lily will call as needed for any follow up appointments.
Lily tells me that she has an appointment with her primary care physician in two weeks. She will be having bloodwork prior to that appointment and is prepared to have a different discussion with her doctor regarding his diet and food recommendations.
